====== JOVD Vision ====== Freedom is not self-evident. The JOVD was founded after the horrors of World War II. Since then, we have existed to defend what we hold dear: a free, democratic, and liberal world. In our statement of principles, we elaborate on what we mean by that. This mission has remained unchanged for 75 years and will continue to be the core of what our organization stands for in the future. As a Dutch youth organization, we are especially the ones who must live with the consequences of the decisions being made today. For us, our future is of existential importance. That’s why we don’t stand on the sidelines. That’s why our vision is: **The JOVD is the liberal architect of the Netherlands of 2049** Believing that freedom, democracy, and liberalism are necessary for a happy and meaningful life, we have a vision for the Netherlands 25 years from now. Our liberal views are an example for society and especially for politics. By spreading these ideas as widely as possible, we show what is possible and inspire today’s politics to act more liberally. But that alone is not enough. Real change requires the right people in the right places, capable of actually implementing our plans. That’s why we focus on young people and give them a liberal education. Our explicit goal is for them to later take on leading roles in business, science, the civil service, or politics. They will have the knowledge and skills to make a difference. Everything we do as an organization—from internal debates to organizing conferences—contributes directly or indirectly to that goal. Through our social, political, educational, and international activities, our members form a close network and can develop themselves in a liberal way. We are used to thinking and acting on a grand scale, knowing that—with a little creativity—much is possible, even with financial limitations. Chapters form the core of how we can realize our vision. That’s where we recruit our members and where they get to know the organization. Every young person should feel at home in a local chapter. That’s only possible if a chapter is welcoming and dares to be itself. The formation process begins at the chapter level and continues when someone volunteers for a committee or board. **Volunteers are the backbone of our organization.** What they share is the willingness to commit to the JOVD despite other obligations and the drive to get the most out of their involvement. We value our volunteers, encourage their energy, and give them plenty of space to make mistakes. We do this with the belief that the lessons learned from today’s mistakes form the foundation for tomorrow’s impact. Thus, being a volunteer is an essential part of our training ground. With us, you make friends for life. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and we help each other out. Whether you’re in a local chapter or at the General Secretariat: at the JOVD, you feel at home. That’s not just how we are—it’s also what we radiate. And of course, JOVD members continue to see each other long after their active time: with an active and vibrant alumni network, we remain connected and united in our ambition to change the world. **We have the plans, the people, and the resources to change the Netherlands. Our role as the architect of 2049 determines everything we do. For us, the JOVD, this is our way of contributing to freedom and democracy.**
